Your ferritin value tells you how much iron you hold in reserve, because ferritin is the protein that stores iron, and in men that value points in two directions that are both often misread. A low ferritin in a man has no obvious explanation: the monthly blood loss that is the most common cause in women is absent here. A reduced store therefore always warrants investigation into where the iron is being lost, usually in the gastrointestinal tract. Conversely, a raised ferritin is often read as a well-filled iron store, when far more often it involves alcohol, fatty liver, excess weight or inflammation. Only with a raised transferrin saturation alongside does iron overload genuinely come into view.
