Biomarkers Included
2 biomarkersThis panel measures PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) alongside Total Testosterone. PSA is a protein produced by prostate tissue, and its blood level is commonly monitored as part of prostate health awareness, particularly in men over 50.
Why this test?
PSA is one of the most widely discussed markers in the context of prostate health. While elevated PSA can be associated with various prostate conditions, including benign enlargement, infection, or other factors, knowing your baseline value can be informative. Adding Total Testosterone provides additional hormonal context, since testosterone and prostate tissue are closely linked.
Who is this test for?
This test may be relevant for:
- Men over 50 who want to monitor their PSA level
- Men with a family history of prostate conditions who want baseline data
- Those who have discussed PSA screening with their healthcare provider and want convenient access to the test
- Men who want to track PSA values over time alongside testosterone
What is tested?
- PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen, ug/l): a protein produced by prostate cells. Blood levels can be influenced by age, prostate size, recent physical activity, and other factors.
- Total Testosterone (nmol/l, male ref: 8.64-29): the total amount of testosterone circulating in the blood, providing hormonal context alongside PSA.
What can this test tell you?
PSA values on their own are not diagnostic; they are one piece of information in a larger picture. An elevated PSA could be associated with benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, recent physical activity, or other causes. By tracking PSA over time, changes in the value (velocity) may be more informative than a single reading. Including Total Testosterone adds context, as hormonal status can influence prostate tissue. Any PSA result that raises questions should be discussed with a healthcare provider who can consider your full medical history.
How is the sample collected?
A blood sample is drawn at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). There are over 750 locations across the Netherlands. After placing your order, you can select a location and time that suits your schedule. The appointment typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes.
When is this test useful?
This panel may be useful when:
- You want to establish a baseline PSA value for future reference
- You have discussed prostate health screening with your healthcare provider
- You want to track PSA changes over time
- You are interested in how testosterone and prostate markers relate in your case
What do the results mean?
PSA results are presented with age-adjusted reference ranges. A value within the expected range for your age is generally considered normal, but PSA interpretation is nuanced. Factors such as recent ejaculation, vigorous cycling, prostate manipulation, and even certain medications can temporarily influence levels. Changes in PSA over time may be more meaningful than a single snapshot. A healthcare provider can help interpret results in the context of your individual situation.
Preparation
For the most representative PSA reading:
- Avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before the test
- Avoid intense cycling for 48 hours before the test
- Avoid vigorous prostate manipulation before the test
These activities can temporarily elevate PSA levels and may affect the accuracy of the result.
What happens after the results?
Results are typically available within a few business days. Your report includes your PSA value and Total Testosterone alongside reference ranges. If your PSA falls outside the expected range, or if you notice a significant change compared to a previous result, reviewing the findings with a healthcare provider is recommended.

What We Test
This panel includes 2 biomarkers, each tested at a certified laboratory using medical-grade equipment.
PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a protein produced exclusively by the prostate gland. A small amount of PSA always leaks into the bloodstream, and its concentration can be measured through a blood test. An elevated PSA level can point to prostate cancer, but often has a harmless cause: an enlarged prostate, inflammation, or even cycling shortly before the blood draw. PSA is therefore a sensitive marker, but not a diagnosis in itself — the result always requires interpretation in the right context.
Learn moreTotal testosterone measures the combined amount of bound and free testosterone in the blood. As the primary androgen, testosterone may influence muscle mass, bone density, libido, mood, and energy levels in both men and women.

PSA is currently the most widely used blood marker for early detection of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the Netherlands, and early detection significantly improves treatment options. However, an elevated PSA does not automatically mean cancer. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is common in men over 50, is the most frequent cause of mildly elevated PSA. Prostate inflammation (prostatitis) can also raise the value considerably. Even temporary factors such as cycling, ejaculation shortly before the test, or a digital rectal exam can influence PSA. The value of PSA lies particularly in its trend over time. A gradually rising PSA across multiple measurements (PSA velocity) can be more clinically relevant than a single elevated value. If a result is notable, a doctor will usually recommend further investigation, such as an MRI or biopsy.
Total Testosterone
HormonesTotal testosterone measures the combined amount of bound and free testosterone in the blood. As the primary androgen, testosterone may influence muscle mass, bone density, libido, mood, and energy levels in both men and women.
Testosterone plays a fundamental role in many bodily functions for both sexes. Imbalances could potentially affect energy, mood, body composition, and reproductive health. Your healthcare provider can help evaluate your levels in the context of your overall health.
