Iron deficiency in men: rare, but never simply normal

Iron deficiency is less common in men than in women, because men don't lose blood through menstruation. That's exactly why a low iron in a man is a reason to look further: where is it being lost? Fatigue, paleness and breathlessness on exertion can come with it.

That "rare in men" quietly makes it dangerous. It gets waved away easily.

Which symptoms fit an iron shortage?

Tiredness, a pale colour, cold hands and feet, breathlessness on exertion and sometimes headaches or hair loss. A low ferritin points to an empty iron store, even before there's anaemia. In research with non-anaemic women, iron improved fatigue (Verdon, 2003).

Why is a low iron in men an extra reason to look?

In men the cause more often lies in diet or in a loss through the gut. So a low iron in a man is a signal for your GP to find the cause, not only to top it up.

So don't reach for iron pills on your own. Always discuss a low value with your GP.

What do you do with a low result?

Discuss a low ferritin with your GP, who can decide what follow-up fits. Topping up without knowing the cause can mask an underlying problem.

Also read the pillar always tired as a man.

Getting started

The Iron Studies map your iron and ferritin. If anaemia is in doubt, the Anemia panel looks more broadly.
