The Liver Function Test (LFT) includes:

• Bilirubin: a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown; elevated levels can be associated with liver or bile duct issues
• Albumin: a protein produced by the liver; low levels may indicate reduced liver function

Each marker reflects a different aspect of liver activity. ALT and AST together may reveal whether liver cells are under stress. GGT, when elevated alongside other markers, could suggest alcohol-related liver strain. ALP and bilirubin can point toward bile flow issues, while albumin reflects the liver's ability to produce proteins. Looking at these markers together gives a more nuanced picture than any single value alone.

A blood sample is drawn at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). There are over 750 locations throughout the Netherlands. The procedure takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

This test may be useful if you consume alcohol regularly, use medications or supplements that are processed by the liver, have a family history of liver conditions, or simply want to establish a baseline for your liver health.
