Biomarkers Included
1 biomarkersThis liver function test (LFT) measures a panel of enzymes and proteins that reflect how your liver is performing. It can provide insight into liver health and may help detect early signs of liver stress or imbalance.
Why this test?
Your liver handles hundreds of functions, from filtering toxins to metabolizing nutrients. Elevated or reduced liver enzyme levels can be among the first signs that something may be off. This panel measures ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, and albumin to give you a comprehensive view of liver function.
Who is this test for?
This test may be relevant for:
- Men who consume alcohol regularly and want to monitor their liver markers
- Those using supplements or medications that may affect the liver
- Men who want baseline liver function data
- Anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, digestive discomfort, or changes in skin color
What is tested?
The Liver Function Test (LFT) includes:
- ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase): an enzyme found primarily in liver cells; elevated levels may indicate liver cell damage
- AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase): an enzyme present in the liver and other tissues; can be elevated in liver or muscle injury
- ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase): an enzyme associated with bile ducts; elevated levels may suggest bile flow issues
- GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase): an enzyme that may be elevated with liver stress, particularly from alcohol use
- Bilirubin: a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown; elevated levels can be associated with liver or bile duct issues
- Albumin: a protein produced by the liver; low levels may indicate reduced liver function
What can this test tell you?
Each marker reflects a different aspect of liver activity. ALT and AST together may reveal whether liver cells are under stress. GGT, when elevated alongside other markers, could suggest alcohol-related liver strain. ALP and bilirubin can point toward bile flow issues, while albumin reflects the liver's ability to produce proteins. Looking at these markers together gives a more nuanced picture than any single value alone.
How is the sample collected?
A blood sample is drawn at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). There are over 750 locations throughout the Netherlands. The procedure takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
When is this test useful?
This test may be useful if you consume alcohol regularly, use medications or supplements that are processed by the liver, have a family history of liver conditions, or simply want to establish a baseline for your liver health. It can also be relevant if you experience symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, unexplained nausea, or yellowing of the skin.
What do the results mean?
Your results will show whether each liver marker falls within the expected reference range. Elevated enzymes may suggest liver stress, but the degree and pattern of elevation can vary widely in significance. For example, a mildly elevated ALT might have different implications than significantly elevated GGT. A healthcare provider can help interpret these values in the context of your health history and lifestyle.
Preparation
Fasting is recommended before this test. Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to your blood draw to ensure accurate results.
What happens after the results?
Your results are typically available within a few business days. You will receive a clear report with each marker and its reference range. Consider reviewing your results with a healthcare provider for a thorough interpretation tailored to your situation.

What We Test
This panel includes 1 biomarkers, each tested at a certified laboratory using medical-grade equipment.
A liver function test is a comprehensive blood panel that combines multiple markers to assess overall liver health and function. It typically includes enzymes such as ALT, AST, and GGT, along with bilirubin, albumin, and other indicators to provide a complete picture of how well the liver is performing.

The liver performs over 500 vital functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, and bile production. A comprehensive liver function test provides a holistic assessment that individual markers alone cannot offer. Early detection of liver dysfunction through routine testing allows for timely intervention, which is particularly important because liver disease often progresses silently without noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred.
