Which liver values react to alcohol?
With regular drinking, doctors look mainly at GGT, and alongside it ALT and AST. GGT is sensitive to alcohol and often rises first. The ratio between AST and ALT can give a hint that alcohol plays a role.

How much is too much?
The Voedingscentrum advises drinking no alcohol, and if you do drink no more than one glass a day. That is not a moral statement, but a risk estimate: the more and the more often, the greater the chance of long-term damage.
For your liver, the pattern over years matters most. A few glasses an evening sounds harmless, but that is exactly the pattern where liver values can quietly creep up. Not to make you feel guilty, but to show where the quiet gain sits.
Does your liver recover if you cut back?
Here is the good news. Your liver has a strong repair capacity, and in an early stage alcohol damage is often reversible. A period of drinking less or not at all can often bring your liver values, and certainly your GGT, down within a few weeks.
According to Thuisarts.nl, cutting back or stopping alcohol is often the most important step with an abnormal liver value. The longer and heavier the strain has been, the more time recovery takes, and with advanced damage not everything can be reversed.

There is no fixed rule, but a day or so without alcohol before a liver test gives a calmer picture. A heavy drinking session just before can temporarily raise your GGT. If you want to measure your usual situation, drink as you normally do and discuss that with your doctor.
Is wine better for your liver than beer or spirits?
For your liver, the amount of pure alcohol matters most, not so much the type of drink. A glass of wine, beer or spirits contains roughly the same amount of alcohol. The idea that wine is healthy for your liver is hard to support.
