Occasional night sweating is usually harmless, often from a too-warm room or a heavy evening. If it persists or you wake up drenched, more may be going on: your thyroid, your hormones, an infection or medication. A blood test can map a number of those causes.
We recommend taking it seriously if it structurally disturbs your nights. Not to scare you, but because it can be investigated.
Which causes play a role?
Common factors are a too-warm sleep environment, alcohol, stress and certain medicines. On top of that, an overactive thyroid (seen in TSH and free T4) or a hormonal shift can play a role. Sometimes persistent night sweats point to something that deserves further investigation.
When do you see your GP?
See your GP with night sweats that persist, go together with weight loss, fever or enlarged lymph nodes, or structurally disturb your nights. These are signals you shouldn't ignore.
Is fatigue also in play? See the pillar always tired as a man.
What does a blood test map?
A blood test can show your thyroid and a number of general health values, so physical causes come into view. Discuss the result with your GP.
