Gamma-GT (GGT) too high: what does it mean?

You get your blood result and there it is: GGT raised. No pain, no symptom, and yet a value outside the lines. Most men’s first question is the heaviest one: is this bad? The short answer: usually not immediately, but it is a value your doctor wants to see in context.

GGT is a sensitive value. That is its strength and its weakness: it picks up a lot, but it also reacts to things that do not immediately mean disease.

What is GGT actually?

GGT is an enzyme found among other places in your liver and your bile ducts. With irritation or strain on those cells it leaks into your blood, which raises the value. That is why GGT is used as a kind of sensitive antenna for your liver and bile ducts.

The tricky part is that the antenna does not tell you where the signal comes from. A raised GGT says that something is irritating your liver or bile ducts, but not automatically what.

Why is my GGT too high?

Alcohol is the best-known cause, and in men often the first a doctor considers. But it is far from the only one. Certain medicines, fatty liver, bile problems and overweight can also drive the value up.

Possible causeHow it plays in
Regular alcoholKnown and common reason for a raised GGT
Fatty liverFat in the liver can gradually drive the value up
MedicinesSome agents raise GGT as a side effect
Bile duct problemsA bile drainage problem can raise the value markedly

Because the causes vary so much, a doctor rarely reads GGT alone. They combine it with other liver enzymes such as ALT and AST to set a direction. If alcohol plays a role, our piece on alcohol and your liver helps you further.

How bad is a raised GGT?

That depends mainly on how high, how long, and what the other values do. A slightly raised GGT without other deviations is often no reason for panic, but it is a reason to check the cause. A markedly raised value, or a combination with other abnormal liver values, calls for more attention.

According to Thuisarts.nl, an abnormal liver value is a reason to look at the cause and repeat the value, not to assume the worst straight away. The trend over time often says more than a single number.

What can you do yourself?

If alcohol plays a part, cutting back or stopping for a while is the most direct dial. GGT often responds well to that, sometimes within weeks. Beyond that, the familiar basics apply: a healthy weight, less belly fat and movement, certainly if fatty liver plays a role.

Do not do detox programmes or liver supplements on your own in the hope of lowering your value. They do not solve the cause and can sometimes add strain. Improving the value starts with tackling the cause.

When to look further?

If your GGT stays raised, or other liver values are abnormal too, your doctor often wants to look further. A repeat measurement, sometimes with a scan, helps sharpen the cause. The Liver Function panel brings your liver values together. The broader picture is in our pillar on liver values in men.

Frequently asked questions

Can my GGT be high without drinking much?

Yes, certainly. Alcohol is a known cause, but fatty liver, overweight, medicines and bile problems can drive the value up just as well. That is why a doctor looks at the whole picture and not only at your alcohol use.

Does GGT drop on its own again?

If the cause disappears, GGT often drops again, sometimes within a few weeks. If someone stops the strain, for instance alcohol, the value frequently recovers. If it stays high, further checks with a doctor are wise.

Should I worry about a slightly raised GGT?

A slightly raised GGT without symptoms and without other abnormal liver values is usually no reason for panic, but it is a reason to check the cause. Often a doctor wants to repeat the value after a while to see whether it was a one-off or a lasting pattern. The trend says more than a single measurement.
