A normal fasting glucose in healthy men usually sits between roughly 4.0 and 6.0 mmol/l. Values between 6.1 and 6.9 mmol/l may point to prediabetes, and from 7.0 mmol/l a doctor thinks of diabetes. Fasting means you've had nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours, except water.
Let's be honest: fasting glucose is one of the simplest blood values to understand, but that's exactly why it often gets misread. One high sample after a bad night says little. It's about the pattern, and about how you prepare for the test.
What is fasting glucose, exactly?
Fasting glucose is the amount of sugar in your blood after a night of fasting. Because you've eaten nothing, you measure the baseline of your sugar balance, without the spike of a recent meal. That makes it an honest, broad starting value.
Your body tries to keep that baseline stable with insulin. If your fasting glucose stays structurally too high, that is often one of the earliest signs that the system is starting to falter.
That's why fasting glucose is on almost every general blood test. It is a cheap, fast value that says a lot about where you stand.
Which value is normal and which is too high?
Most laboratories use similar borders. This table lays them out so you can place your own result in context. Note: these are guide values, not a diagnosis.
| Fasting glucose | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Below 4.0 mmol/l | On the low side, discuss with your doctor |
| 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/l | Usually a normal value |
| 6.1 to 6.9 mmol/l | Possibly prediabetes |
| 7.0 mmol/l or higher | Fits diabetes, only a doctor confirms that |
According to the Diabetes Fonds, one raised reading is not yet a diagnosis. Your value can rise with stress, illness, lack of sleep or a heavy night before. In case of doubt, a doctor repeats the test or adds your HbA1c.
Why does fasting glucose matter in men?
Men develop a disturbed sugar balance at a lower weight than women, because they store belly fat sooner. A slightly raised fasting glucose can therefore show up early in a man, even when the scale looks fine.
On top of that, a rising blood sugar links to fatigue, lower libido and slower recovery, complaints many men attribute to something else. The wider picture is in our pillar on blood sugar in men.
If your fasting glucose is just on the high side, that's no disaster but a foothold. It's often the engine of insulin resistance, which you can read more about in recognising insulin resistance.
What many men don't know: your fasting glucose can differ from day to day. A short night, a hard workout the evening before or heavy stress can temporarily drive your value up. That's why a doctor prefers to look at a few measurements or at your HbA1c rather than one chance sample.
How do you prepare well for the test?
A fasting glucose is only reliable if you really have it drawn fasting. Small preparation mistakes can distort your value. This checklist helps you along.
- Eat and drink nothing for at least 8 hours beforehand, except water.
- Water is allowed and even advisable, since drawing blood when dehydrated is harder.
- Skip coffee, sweetened tea and soft drinks, including diet versions.
- Plan the test in the morning if possible, when staying fasted is easiest.
- Mention it if you're ill or have just finished a hard workout.
According to Thuisarts.nl, fasting is important because a recent meal temporarily drives your glucose up. A non-fasting value isn't worthless, but it's harder to compare with the thresholds.
What if your value is too high?
If you're in the prediabetes range, that's often exactly the phase where lifestyle can still do a lot. Moving more, losing weight around your middle and cutting fast sugars can help lower your fasting glucose. How to approach and measure that is covered in lowering blood sugar.
To see your sugar balance more broadly, the Diabetes panel looks at your HbA1c alongside your glucose. That way you see both the moment and the trend.
Important: these are general insights, not personal advice. Discuss a raised fasting glucose with your GP, who can help you decide whether further steps are needed.
