Belly fat and your hormones: the testosterone-insulin connection

In men, belly fat, a low testosterone and insulin resistance often go together. They can reinforce each other: belly fat can push testosterone down, and a low testosterone can encourage fat storage around your belly. A blood test can map both sides.

This is one of the most underrated links in men's health. It's rarely discussed in one breath, while it's often one story.

How are belly fat and testosterone connected?

Fat tissue around your belly is hormonally active and can convert testosterone into oestrogen. So more belly fat can go with a lower testosterone. The other way around, a low testosterone can make it harder to keep muscle and lose fat.

Where does insulin come in?

Belly fat also goes with insulin resistance, where your body responds less well to insulin. HbA1c and HOMA-IR can say something about it. See also recognising insulin resistance.

What can you do with it?

The circle can often be broken, and knowing where you stand helps. Discuss a low testosterone or an unsettled blood sugar with your GP. See also the pillar cholesterol in men.

Getting started

The Metabolic Health Check looks at your blood sugar, and the Testosterone Panel at your testosterone, so you see both sides.
